Ellijay’s name is derived from Indian words meaning “many waters” and you can experience our many rivers!

There are three rivers in Gilmer County:  Cartecay, Ellijay and Coosawattee.

Gilmer County offers many water recreation opportunities such as tubing, lake activities on Carter’s Lake, kayaks, and trout fishing.

There are two state parks in the area:

Amicalola Falls State Park, 418 Amiocalola Falls Lodge Dr., Dawsonville, GA, and

Fort Mountain State Park, 181 Fort Mountain Park Rd., Chatsworth, GA.

 

Carters Lake is a 3200 acre reservoir in the southwestern corner of the county offering a beautiful undeveloped shoreline and great fishing.  They offer a full service marina and boat ramps.

 

Living in or visiting Gilmer county offers an opportunity to get back to nature and a lifestyle that many have forgotten.

Gilmer County offers many opportunities for leisure activities including a public library, golf course, senior center, youth sports, seasonal events, outdoor recreation and more.

 

White path Golf Course is a public course designed by world renowned architect Rocky Roquemore.    A new clubhouse was completed and opened in late 2010.

 

Gilmer County Parks & Recreation Department  offers the youth of Gilmer county year round athletics including cheer, football, basketball, soccer, softball, baseball, tennis, swimming, and wrestling.

 

River Park located along the Coosawattee River, is a linear park with a three-quarter mile walking track, picnic areas, tennis courts, exercise stations, and a small playground.  It is also home to Veterans Memorial Bridge & Garden where tribute is paid to our great nation and all veterans.

 

Harrison Park is a 26 acre passive recreation park under development in downtown Ellijay.  Harrison Park currently has walking paths and off-road parking available.  More amenities are under construction.

 

Gilmer County Senior Center offers a variety of activities such as crafts, music, exercise, games and special field trips.  They have transportation available to all seniors who may want to attend the center for congregate meals.  Home delivered meals provide assistance for persons 60 and over.
